Sillage
A publication about fragrance, fashion, and what the things in both actually cost to make.
Sillage is the French word for a wake, the trail a boat leaves behind it on water. In fragrance it means the part of you that stays in a room after you have left it. We took the name because it describes what a publication is supposed to do.
What we cover
Three beats, and the line between them is thinner than it looks. Fragrance, which is the least written-about luxury category and the one with the widest gap between price and cost. Fashion, on the same terms. And culture, which is where both of those are decided before anyone puts a price on them.
The through-line is construction. What a thing is made of, what that costs, and where the rest of the money goes. Almost every piece here is a version of that question.
How we write
Plainly, and with the specifics in. If a claim needs a number we go and find the number, and where we cannot find one we say so rather than reaching for a phrase that sounds like evidence. Nothing here is written to a word count.
Pieces are published under the house byline. The editorial team is small and most of what appears here is worked on by more than one of us, so a single name on the top would be doing more flattering than describing.
What a thing is made of, what that costs, and where the rest of the money goes.
